JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks an Anaesthetist is expected to perform include:

  • Administering anaesthetics to patient undergoing surgical operation according to the nature of the operation
  • Examining patient to determine his/her capacity to withstand shock of operation and anaesthesia
  • Selecting local or general type of anaesthetic to be administered such as ether, chloroform or cocaine according to nature of operation
  • Checking apparatus for operational efficiency and administering selected anaesthetic to the patient
  • Informing Surgeon of patient’s readiness for operation
  • Checking pulse and watching respiration and eyeballs of patient while under anaesthesia and surgery to check his/her general condition
  • Examining and treating patient for ill effects and weakness after operation
  • Providing for blood and fluid transfusion during operation and oxygen therapy if necessary
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1, 2
  • It is not a desk job
  • Need to handle a team of nurses and other medical staff
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are not available
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Individuals usually work for 6/7 days a week and 9/10 hours everyday. The organization or institution remains open and functional for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week 
  • Shift system may be available
  • Overtime may be required

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 4

Preferably, MBBS/MD in anaesthetics

  • Knowledge of airway management
  • Knowledge of anatomical capabilities of veins and arteries, nerves and plexus blocks
  • Skilled in using the anaesthesia equipment

  • Good communication skills
