JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Plant Physiologist is expected to perform include:

  • Studying functional activities in living plants and determining factors affecting them
  • Conducting field and laboratory experiments to determine effects of environmental conditions on plants
  • Correcting deficient symptoms in rate of growth, colour of leaves, quantum of yield, etc.
  • Administering nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, magnesium sulphur and other chemicals in soil
  • Folio spraying of plant or pre-soaking seed with stimulant prior to planting
  • Studying effects of environmental conditions on storage life of fruits and vegetables
  • Studying life history of resistant species of plants and conducting research on physiological problems of Indian plants
  • Conducting research on land reclamation, sand dune fixation and desert and semi-desert conditions, metabolism of parasite plants of India, special excretion of roots which controls plant growth, physiological study of germination of seeds and photoperiodism​ of Indian plants
  • Preparing and co-ordinating reports of physiological studies

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 3

Preferably, M.Sc. in Plant Physiology, Biochemistry, Botany, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • In-depth knowledge of plant cells, tissues and organs
  • Familiar with proteins involved in plant stress response
  • Experience of analysis of expression patterns of genes in relation to different environmental  conditions
  • Skilled in measurements of accumulation level of biochemical compounds involved in abiotic stress response
  • Ability to stay abreast with modern techniques used in plant physiological status assessment
  • Knowledge of plant biological databases helpful in plant physiology research
  • Knowledge of plant metabolites involved in biotic/abiotic stress responses
  • Knowledge of how plant function at molecular, cellular and whole plant level
