JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Light Keeper, Lighthouse is expected to perform include:

  • Operating light house signalling equipment to guide incoming or passing ships, keeping a watch during night and maintaining equipment in working order.
  • Lighting gas lamp (lighting equipment), cleaning nozzle hole of the burner, maintaining a supply of oil to burner at prescribed pressure
  • Ensuring that the mantles of gas lamp burns brightly without any flame
  • Operating winding machines and pulleys to rotate lens around light or lamp to throw out light rays at set speed
  • Recording meteorological data, direction of wind, temperature (both inside and outside) of lamp-room, condition of seas (whether calm, moderate or rough) etc. at prescribed intervals
  • Putting out light at sunrise by cutting off oil supply to gas lamp
  • Cleaning and polishing lenses, lamp and glass panes daily using special cloth and solution
  • Oiling bearing wheels, clock work, weight shaft mechanism and other equipment during the day
  • Ensuring that oil drum is full and is maintained at prescribed pressure
  • Submitting periodical reports regarding condition of light-house, meteorological data etc.; to superiors

  • Attending to minor breakdowns and replacing parts such as burners, mantles, etc. 
  • Reporting to supervisors cases of major breakdowns for rectifications 
  • Maintaining general cleanliness and ensuring that ladder platform, galleries, dome, etc. are in perfect service condition
WORK ENVIRONMENT 
  • It is not a desk job
  • The role does not involve team handling
  • Travelling is not required on the job unless there are multiple lighthouses
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are not available
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Work is for 5/6 days a week
  • Main part of the working hours are from dusk to dawn
  • The role involves working in shifts
  • The role includes working on weekends and holidays

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 

Minimum – 10th pass

KEY COMPETENCIES 
  • Knowledge of operating light house signalling equipment, lighting gas lamp (lighting equipment),
  • Knowledge of winding machines and pulleys, direction of wind, temperature of lamp-room, condition of seas, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning and polishing lenses, lamp and glass, oiling bearing wheels, clock work, weight shaft mechanism and other equipment
  • Understanding the reasons of minor and major breakdowns and replacing parts such as burners, mantles, etc.
DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES 

Near vision for both eyes have to be 0.6 and distant vision has to be V 6/6 Reads
