JOB DESCRIPTION ¹

The tasks a Convertor Blower is expected to perform include:

• Operating bessemer convertor for obtaining the required carbon content in molten iron for manufacture of steel by blowing

• Tilting the convertor by electrical device to receive molten metal from the ladles (coming from mixer furnace)

• Blowing air and steam into convertor at required pressure by operating electric switches

• Bringing the convertor to vertical position and continuing blowing

• Judging the metal condition from flames and sparks shooting out of convertor

• Stopping the blowing process when satisfied that molten metal is blown for further processing into steel

• Tilting the convertor to pour metal into another ladle for next operation

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• It requires one to be on their toes

• Need not handle a team

• Local travelling is a part of this job role

• Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities

• Work from home option is not available

Working hours

• Iron and Steel companies usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from company to company

• Shift system maybe available

• Competent in operating bessemer convertor

• Well-versed with operation procedures & protocol

• Proficiency in handling machinery and tools

DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES ¹

• Competent in watching signals from furnace and power house and take necessary action

• Ability to maintain the log book for recording serial number of blow, time, bottom number, vessel number blows on bottom, etc.
