JOB DESCRIPTION ¹

The tasks a Chick Maker is expected to perform include:

Making reed or bamboo chicks by sizing and dressing reeds or bamboo wickers and fastening them together with twine
Collecting material, and cutting and sizing them into thin strips according to the design
Assembling and fastening the strips together with thin rope or twine to form them into mats of the desired size
Trimming the edges and fixing the cloth piping on four sides

It requires one to sit and work
Need not handle a team
Local travelling is not a part of this job
Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
Work from home option is not available

Working hours

Handicraft and carpet units usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from unit to unit

Knowledge of inspecting bamboo for signs of insect and fungal infestation
Ability to weave, cut and size bamboo straps into mats
Well-versed in collecting material, and cutting and sizing them into thin strips according to design
Hand-eye coordination
Arm-hand steadiness
Manual dexterity

Knowledge of stitching coloured cloth over chicks
