JOB DESCRIPTION ¹

The tasks a Points Man, Railway is expected to perform include:

Operating the hand points for setting the railway lines as per the instructions of the Points Worker or Station Master in the non-interlock and non-signal lines for shunting and the arrival and departure of the trains
Setting the points as per the instructions from the Station Master or Points Worker
Locking the facing-points in the non-interlock yards or non-signal lines for safeguarding against derailment of the train
Signalling the train with a hand flag or light to proceed in the right direction
Ensuring that the connecting lines are clear of any obstructions and that the brake of the stationary train is away from the fowling mark
Coupling and uncoupling the waggons and coaches during the shunting of trains

WORK ENVIRONMENT ^{14, 15}

It needs one to be on their toes
Need not handle a team
Local travelling is not a part of this job role
Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities

Working hours

Working hours are 8 hours everyday for 6 days a week

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING ⁹

Minimum - 10th pass or ITI graduate or its equivalent

KEY COMPETENCIES ¹

Proficient in signalling trains using a hand flag or light to proceed in the right direction
Adept at ensuring that other connected lines are clear of obstructions and that the brake of the stationary train is away from the fowling mark
Knowledge of how to couple or uncouple wagons and coaches during the shunting of trains
