JOB DESCRIPTION 1
The tasks a Kiln Operator, Wood is expected to perform include:
  • Operating steam kiln for seasoning or drying wood to specified moisture content
  • Feeding water into boiler and lighting fire in boiler fire-box
  • Directing workers to load and place lumber in kiln 
  • Ascertaining moisture content of wood at various locations in kiln by moisture metre or simple methods
  • Waiting till boiler acquires sufficient heat, planning drying cycle according to moisture content, dimensions and species of wood 
  • Adjusting valve to release and regulate flow of steam into kiln
  • Starting water pump to feed additional water into boiler 
  • Setting automatic controls to regulate kiln temperature and humidity for specified time 
  • Switching on fans inside kiln and getting kiln doors closed to make it air-tight
  • Recording humidity and kiln temperature 
  • Controlling valves to regulate steam supply while maintaining balance between temperatures and moisture content to avoid damage to wood 
  • Keeping lumber in kiln for specified period
  • Opening kiln on completion of drying cycle and verifying moisture content of wood 
WORK ENVIRONMENT 
  • It needs one to be on their toes
  • Need to handle a team
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Wood & carpentry units usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours every day. This may vary from unit to unit
  • Shift system maybe available

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Knowledge of different types of wood, such as Sheesham, Mango, Teak, Rosewood, Plywood and Particle Wood
  • Well-versed in kiln operations
  • Knowledge of wood, lumber and kiln
  • Knowledge of moisture testing methods
  • Proficient in operating valves, pumps, automatic controls
  • Ability to plan drying cycle of kiln
  • Well-versed in controlling temperature and humidity inside kiln and health and safety guidelines
  • Proficiency in directing workers to remove lumber from kiln when dried
DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES 1
  • Ability to perform the duties of a Boiler Attendant
  • Ability to attend to other work when kiln is not working
