JOB DESCRIPTION 
The tasks of a Furniture Maker, Wood is expected to perform include:
  • Making and repairing chairs, tables, benches, desks, shelves etc., by common carpentry processes using hand and or power tools or both
  • Studying of drawing and sample 
  • Calculating sizes and quantity of timber required
  • Preparing patterns of different parts of article to be made on card board
  • Marking off pieces using patterns, square, pencil, rule, scribber, etc.
  • Shaping them according to specifications by planning, drilling, sawing, etc.
  • Marking and making necessary joints like dove-tail, tenon-mortise, lap etc.
  • Checking dimensions and fitting of joints frequently
  • Fixing hinges, hooks etc. at required places
  • Assembling different parts and fitting them permanently by gluing, drilling, dowelling, nailing, screwing etc.
  • Filling up superfluous holes with putty 
  • Smoothening surface using sand paper, earth (yellow) and files
  • Checking completed articles and ensuring correct fitting, rigidity and finish
  • Sharpening his own tools
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT 
  • It needs one to be on their toes
  • Need not handle a team
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
  • Work from home option is not available
 
Working hours
  • Working hours are 8/10 hours everyday for 6 days a week. This may vary from factory to factory
  • Being self-employed is also an option. In this case, the working hours and days will be flexible 
  • Shift system maybe available

  • Well-versed in wood furniture tools like gluing, drilling, dowelling, nailing screwing etc.
  • Ability to bend wooden part to required shape

Knowledge of polishing and painting of the finished articles
