JOB DESCRIPTION 1
The tasks a Jointer Machine Operator is expected to perform include:
  • Setting and operating specially designed machine for making plough and tang and other water tight joints
  • Studying drawings
  • Placing fence to guide stock at specified angle to cutting knives and placing stock on edge against fence on machine table
  • Starting machine and sliding stock over rotating cutting knives, using fence as guide
  • Checking cuts on stock against blue prints or sketches using mitre gauges, squares etc. and making necessary adjustments
  • Feeding stock across cutting knives and continuing operation
  • Turning stock and machines other edge frequently checking its width with calipers or gauges to ensure accuracy of fitting
WORK ENVIRONMENT 
  • It needs one to be on their toes
  • Need not handle a team 
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Wood & Carpentry units usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from unit to unit
  • Shift system maybe available

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Knowledge of cutting or trimming wood to specified dimensions
  • Knowledge of fitting cutter knives in cutter head of machine and tightening set screws with wrench to secure them in position
  • Well-versed in monitoring machines, adjusting speed and tension and clearing jams to ensure proper operation
  • Proficient in examining logs or lumber to plan the best cuts
  • Well-versed in checking cuts on stock against blue prints or sketches using mitre gauges, squares etc.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Well-versed in collecting wood stock and marking cutting line with pencil
  • Knowledge of different types of wood such as Teak, Sheesham, Mango, Rosewood, Plywood and Particular Wood
DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES 1
  • Ability to smoothen and reduce wood stock to required thickness 
  • Knowledge of replacing broken or dull cutting tools
  • Knowledge of grinding and sharpening cutting blades 
  • Ability to clean and oil machine 
  • Knowledge to operate other wood cutting machines
