JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Fisheries Inspector is expected to perform include:  

  • Supervising and monitoring the staff engaged in fish collection, sale, curing and demonstration centres
  • Demonstrating proper methods of fish culture and storing to public
  • Supervising sale of fish and proper maintenance of fish curing yards
  • Issuing licences to Fishermen for fishing in state waters (including back waters)
  • Conducting regular patrol to prevent illicit fishing
  • Surveying the area under jurisdiction for fish breeding, stocking, etc.
  • Assessing potentiality of water area
  • Executing development schemes such as mechanization of fishing crafts, financial assistance to Fishermen, training of Fishermen, etc.
  • Arranging for chemical ingredients necessary for fish culture in ponds, tanks, rivers, etc.
  • Arranging for supply and transport of fish seed and fingerlings to Fishermen
  • Performing other official duties such as collection of revenue, sending reports for publication in gazette, etc.
  • Listening to grievances of Fishermen and taking necessary measures
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1
  • It is a field job   
  • Work from home is not available
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs maybe available
  • Supervising Fish Overseer and Fieldsmen is required
  • Local travelling is part of the job
Working hours
  • Working hours are 9 hours daily for 6 days a week   
  • Overtime is common
  • Shift system is available

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 2

Minimum – Preferably MFSc

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Knowledge of every aspect of fish farming, culturing and storing        
  • Knowledge of using and maintaining fishing tools and equipment
  • Skilled in different fishing methods
  • Knowledge of safety standards and hygiene practices while fish farming
  • Knowledge of fish bait, fish culturing, breeding, etc.
  • Knowledge of packaging, preserving and transporting the fish
  • Knowledge of the latest developments in fishing techniques and methods
  • Proficient in basic arithmetic
  • Efficient in the application and promotion of ethical fishing practices
DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES 2

Specialization in aquaculture or fish genetics and breeding
