JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Pisciculturist is expected to perform include:  

  • Directing activities connected with development of fisheries 
  • Assisting in breeding and rearing of fish by artificial methods    
  • Conducting experiments on fish culture to obtain data concerning their habits, migration, growth, food, enemies, places of breeding and spawning 
  • Monitoring conditions of artificial hatching such that they closely resemble those of natural hatching 
  • Devising methods and directing work of collecting, fertilizing and incubating fish eggs 
  • Supervising care of spawn and fry 
  • Directing rearing of fish   
  • Supervising sorting, transferring, distribution and release of seed, fingerlings, etc., in streams, ponds and wells, for restocking them
  • Directing constructions of reservoirs, ponds, dams, etc. and supervising general maintenance of hatchery  
  • Supervising activities of fish preservation or marketing
  • Cultivating oysters in specially prepared oyster sea-beds, observing growth of pearl oyster and chanks, if required   
  • Managing artificial pearl formation
  • Supervising works of divers
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1
  • It is a field job
  • Work from home is not applicable
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs maybe available
  • The candidate will supervise workers of the fishery and divers
  • Local travelling maybe part of the job
Working hours

  • Working hours are 9 hours every day for 6 days a week   
  • Overtime may be involved

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 4

 Minimum – Preferably Bachelor’s degree in Fishery Science

  • Skilled in research and development, especially related to fisheries activities   
  • Knowledge of characteristics of different fishes, their habitat, feed requirement, etc.
  • Proficient in handling large amount of data   
  • Aware of similar research work done in the past
  • Efficient in presenting the results of their work
  • Knowledge of scientific rules and methods to solve problems   
  • Knowledge of all the activities involved in fisheries
  • Knowledge of fresh water or salt-water fish culture   
  • Knowledge of different marine life species and their habitat   
  • Knowledge of the process used for artificial breeding of fishes   
  • Knowledge of oyster cultivation
