JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks an Animal Nutritionist is expected to perform include:

  • Studying composition and nutritive values of animal feeds
  • Framing balanced diets and feeding schedules for different kinds of animals
  • Studying the habits of animals in relation to type and quantity of feed they consume
  • Determining the feed on the basis of effect on size, weight and development, strength and yield of milk, meat, wool, eggs, etc. of the animals
  • Experimenting with the nourishment of animals using different types of feeds and also recording the improvement and growth in each case
  • Prescribing the correct feed such as greens, dry or preserved hay or leaves, grass, oats or mixed feed, etc. for different types of animals for better yield of milk, meat, etc.
  • Developing the feed mixture for commercial purposes
  • Classifying the types of plants harmful to animals as feed and making sure that they are not used
  • Treating sick animals by regulating and prescribing specific feed
  • Analysing​ the feed samples to determine protein, carbohydrate, fat, mineral and vitamin contents and trace elements
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1, 2, 4
  • It is not a desk job
  • Need not handle a team
  • Local travelling is necessary

Working hours
  • Individuals usually work for 5/6 days a week and 8/9 hours everyday. The organization or institution remains open and functional for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 4

Preferably, B.V Sc. in animal husbandry

  • Skilled in assessing the relative nutritional values of various feeds
  • Efficient in supporting the work of agricultural advisers/consultants
  • Proficient in visiting farms and interpreting forage analysis
  • Knowledge of using specialist computer software to devise diets and produce reports
  • Efficient in working with clients to formulate diets that meet the requirements/objectives that they want for their animals
  • Skilled in analysing nutritional disorders in animals
  • Skilled in maintaining awareness of technical and scientific developments
