JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Clinical Psychologist is expected to perform include:

  • Diagnosing or evaluating mental and emotional disorders of individuals and administering programmes of treatment
  • Interviewing patients in clinics, hospitals, prisons and other institutions
  • Observing patients and conducting psychological tests to diagnose disorders and formulate plans of treatment
  • Treating psychological disorders to effect improved adjustments using various techniques
  • Selecting approach to use in individual therapy
  • Planning frequency, intensity and duration of therapy required for the patient
  • Developing treatment programme for patients by collaborating with Psychiatrics
  • Instructing and directing students serving psychological internships in hospitals and clinics
  • Developing experimental designs and conducting research in fields of personality development and adjustment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders
  • Serving as a consultant to industrial, social, educational, welfare and other agencies
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1, 2
  • It is not a desk job
  • Need not handle a team
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Individual usually works for 5/6 days a week and 8/9 hours everyday. The organization or institution remains open and functional for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week
  • Shift system may be available
  • Overtime may be required
  • Being self-employed is also an option. In this case, the working hours and days will be flexible

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 3

Preferably, Master's in psychology

  • Knowledge of all psychology related therapies
  • Knowledge of psychological techniques such as milieu therapy, psychodrama, play therapy, hypnosis, etc.
  • Familiar with therapy styles such as directive, nondirective and supportive therapy
  • In-depth knowledge of behavioural theories
  • Knowledge of different types of personality, interests, learning and motivation
  • Skilled in assessing and treating behavioural and affective disorders
