JOB DESCRIPTION 1
The tasks a Laboratory Technician, Artificial Breeding is expected to perform include:
  • Measuring purity and potency of bull semen
  • Preserving and processing bull semen for artificial insemination of cattle
  • Observing sample of freshly collected sperm cells
  • Determining density of semen using densimeter
  • Adding extender, sodium citrate and antibiotics to semen to dilute and preserve sample
  • Transferring semen to refrigerating unit
  • Cleaning and sterilising laboratory equipment
  • Performing tests on semen to extend survival rate and time of sperm cells
  • Developing improved preservative processes
  • Cultivating, isolating and identifying pathogenic bacteria and other micro-organisms in semen

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 1

  • It is not a desk job

  • Need not handle a team

  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role

  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available

  • Work from home option is not available

Working hours

  • Hospitals/clinics usually work for 6/7 days a week and 9/10 hours everyday. This may vary from hospital to hospital

  • Shift system maybe available

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 3

Minimum – B.V.Sc. and A.H. (Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry)

 

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Knowledge of preservative processes
  • Knowledge of relevant tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of chemicals used for preservation
  • Skilled in conducting tests and using equipment
  • Knowledge of common bacteria and micro-organisms found in semen
  • Detailed knowledge about the reproductive system of animals
  • Skilled in performing calculations involved in artificial insemination process
  • Familiar with different varieties of animals and associated fertility
