JOB DESCRIPTION ¹

The tasks an Optician, General is expected to perform include:

Dispensing fabricated lenses to prescription specifications
Fitting lenses in frames
Reading prescription for frame and lens specifications
Assisting customer in choosing frames by advising correct size and shape
Measuring customer for bridge length and pupillary distance using ruler
Selecting lens blank from stock
Setting and operating machines such as generator, polisher, edger and hardener to make lens to specifications
Inspecting lenses and determining specifications of broken lenses with power determining and optical instruments

WORK ENVIRONMENT ^{1, 2}

It is a desk job
Need not handle a team
Local travelling is not a part of this job role
Part-time work and contractual jobs may be available
Work from home option is not available

Working hours

Individual usually works for 5/6 days a week and 8/9 hours everyday. Some organizations or institutions remains open and functional for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week
Shift system may be available
Overtime may be required
Being self-employed is also an option. In this case, the working hours and days will be flexible

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING ³

Preferably, B.Sc. in Optometry

KEY COMPETENCIES ¹

In-depth knowledge of eye testing procedures
Skilled in working with instruments like pliers, etc.
Knowledge of optical goods such as binoculars, magnifying glasses and non-prescription sunglasses
Skilled in matching different eye frames for different facial features
Proficient in fitting lens in the frames and working on the related equipment
