JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Mycologist is expected to perform include:

  • Conducting research on identification, structure, growth, dissemination and classification of fungi
  • Evolving methods to apply findings in fields of agriculture medicine and industry
  • Obtaining specimen of fungi and preparing cultures in selected media
  • Conducting microscopic observations of specimens under laboratory conditions to study their structure, growth and multiplication
  • Identifying and classifying the chosen specimen
  • Studying relationship between fungi and other plants and animals
  • Evolving the techniques of control of fungi by chemical and other methods
  • Extracting, analysing​ and testing the use of by-products of fungus activity
  • Evolving new strains of fungi for similar studies
  • Conducting experiments for medical and industrial application of the by-products
  • Specializing in and conducting research and development in fields of antibiotics, preservation of stores, etc.
  • Finding improved methods of propagating and growing edible fungi
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1, 2
  • It is not a desk job
  • Need not handle a team
  • Local travelling is necessary
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs may be available

Working hours
  • Organizations usually work for 5/6 days a week and 9/10 hours everyday. This may vary from organization to organization

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 5

Preferably, M.Sc. in Zoology/Biotechnology/Microbiology/Mycology and Plant Pathology

  • Proficient in finding the techniques that can be brought in use to control fungi by chemicals
  • Skilled in obtaining specimen of fungi

  • Knowledge of plant and animal organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, interdependencies, and interactions with each other and the environment
  • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo
