JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Zoologist, General is expected to perform include:

  • Studying animal life in relation to origin, evolution, classification, structure, behaviour, life processes, disease, environment, growth, development, genetics, mutations, etc.
  • Relating findings to problems affecting human, animal and plant life
  • Undertaking field trips to collect data
  • Observing animal life in natural habitat on land and in water and collecting specimens for study in the laboratory
  • Dissecting specimens and studying structure and functioning of various systems such as nervous reproduction and circulatory systems, anatomy of body cells, etc.
  • Examining under microscope and other scientific equipment regarding formation and functioning of organs, diseases of organs, cells, etc.
  • Preparing microscopic slides of special features for future study and research
  • Preserving rare species of animals in special preservatives and getting large animals mounted by Taxidermist
  • Studying characteristics of living organisms
  • Analysing findings and interpreting data giving possible or probable causes that affect human life
  • Collecting, rearing and breeding various kinds of animals and birds such as mice, monkeys, fowls, pigeons, etc. in artificial condition in captivity for experimental purpose
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1, 2
  • It is not a desk job
  • The candidate will supervise a team of Assistant Zoologists and other staff
  • Local travelling may be a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs may be available
  • Work from home option may be available
Working hours
  • Organizations usually work for 6/7 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from organization to organization

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 3

Preferably, B.Sc. in zoology

  • Skilled in computer application in order to use geographical information system
  • In-depth knowledge of cellular biology, anatomy, ecology, chemistry and physics
  • Knowledge of local laws and regulations concerning wild animals
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Skilled in researching and writing thesis for the conducted research
  • Knowledge of common genetic and developmental mechanisms of animals
  • Skilled in detecting a disease and immunizing the animal against it
  • Skilled in pest control methods
  • Skilled in rearing and breeding animals for research purpose
