JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Radio Operator, Aircraft is expected to perform include:

  • Operating and adjusting radio equipment onboard an aircraft in flight to maintain contact with ground station
  • Exchanging messages to inform the pilot about weather conditions, landing instructions, etc.
  • Inspecting equipment including the radar before undertaking flights
  • Operating the radio to send and receive messages and maintain contact with ground stations
  • Receiving weather information and other messages in prescribed codes from Control Tower Operator and transmitting them to Pilots during flights
  • Operating radio navigational equipment and frequently tuning to detect or listen to international distress signals
  • Maintaining a log of all messages and instructions received and despatched
  • Operating a direction finding equipment and reporting readings to the pilot
  • Performing radio repairing task in case of emergency

  • Knowledge of receiving and transmitting code messages by radio telephone or radio-telegraph system
  • Understanding and knowledge of frequencies and wavelengths
  • Knowledge of weather reporting
  • Skilled in maintaining wireless equipment, recording of messages received or sent and carrying out minor repairs and replacements of parts
