JOB DESCRIPTION 1

 The tasks a Signaller, Ship is expected to perform include:

  • Signalling messages by waving flags or flashing semaphore (light) depending on natural light and weather conditions to port authorities and nearby ships
  • Keeping watch at port, observing approaching ships with binoculars and informs authorities accordingly
  • Obtaining instructions from supervisors regarding place or position where the incoming ship is to be communicated to ship authorities at sea
  • Transferring messages in international signalling system to ship authorities by signalling with flags or flashes of semaphore depending on visibility and weather conditions
  • Maintaining record of all messages sent out or received
  • Receiving messages from ships, informing Pilot and arranging for piloting the ship in to port
  • Arranging launches and boarding for shipping crew or Pilots for going to the ship or coming to shore
  • Taking barometer readings, observing the force and direction of wind, wave positions, etc. and recording them in a log book
  • Attending to telephone calls regarding movement of ships and any messages to be sent
  • Maintaining shipping registers indicating name of ships, time of arrival and departure, place where berthed, etc.
  • Hoisting weather signals or flags at time of emergency, warning ships to stay at sea
  • Performing watch duty by shifts from observations tower
WORK ENVIRONMENT 
  • It is a desk job however requires working on and off watch towers at ports
  • The role does not involve team handling
  • Travelling is not required on the job
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are not available
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Working is 5/6 days a week and minimum 8/9 hours every day
  • The job involves working in shifts including nights
  • The role includes working on weekends and holidays

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 

Passed 10 +2 or equivalent 

KEY COMPETENCIES 
  • Knowledge of signals, flags and instruments used to signal ships
  • Working knowledge of the international signalling system for ships
  • Skilled in sending and receiving messages from ships, informing pilots and arranging for piloting ship in to port  
  • Ability to understand barometer readings, observe the force and direction of wind, wave positions, etc.
  • Knowledge of the various weather signals or flags at time of emergency, warning signs, etc.
DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES 
  • Radar Observer Course (ROC) 
  • Automatic Radar Flotting Aid (ARPA) Certificate issued as per DG Shipping requirement of STCW 95 2

  • Training courses under Directorate General of Shipping
  • The Shipping Corporation of India
