JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Geologist is expected to perform include:

  • Studying the physical structure of Earth’s crust, its rock formations and fossils to determine Earth’s history, gradual changes and development or to locate minerals and fuels
  • Conducting exploratory geological survey using special instruments and techniques 
  • Supervising drilling operations in areas of economic mineral deposits
  • Collecting samples of minerals or rocks, at various depths, for detailed study to determine their formulation and quality and quantity of deposits
  • Evaluating extent of deposit for commercial exploitation 
  • Undertaking and co-ordinating various activities related to drilling, testing, development and production of minerals
  • Preparing reports, maps and diagrams showing out crops of rocks and ore bodies and their various geological structures
  • Advising on suitability of soils and rocks for construction of dams, tunnels, roads, buildings, etc., and on strength of foundation necessary
  • Rendering advice on problems of underground water reservoirs
  • Studying natural phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanoes, glaciers and mountain building for advancement of knowledge and research on gradual changes and development of Earth’s crust
  • Combining teaching with research and administrative work when employed by a college or university

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 3

PreferablyM.Sc. in geology

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Skilled in using microscopes, mapping software, compasses, picks and rock hammers or chisels
  • Knowledge of chemical composition, structure and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo
  • Skilled in investigating the composition, structure and history of the Earth's crust through collection, examination, measurement and classification of soils, minerals, rocks and fossil remains
  • Knowledge of all the equipment required to conduct an exploratory geological survey
  • Knowledge of practical application of engineering science and technology
  • Knowledge of special instruments and techniques such as air survey and air photo mapping and geo-chemical and geophysical prospecting methods to locate deposits of mineral, oil and gas
