JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Librarian is expected to perform include:

  • Organizing and maintaining systematic collection of books, periodicals and other printed matter in library 
  • Issuing books and materials to the readers
  • Selecting publications to be purchased and receiving priced or complimentary copies of books, periodicals and other publications from authors or publishers
  • Supervising classification, indexing, cataloguing, shelving of books and other publications and maintaining records of stock and issues
  • Guiding readers in selecting books or finding information required by them
  • Examining books periodically for damage, if any, and deciding which books are to be repaired or re-bound
  • Imparting information from library sources on subjects of general or special interest to individuals or groups
  • Liaising with other libraries and library associations
  • Writing abstracts and summaries of important articles from incoming periodicals
  • Determining library policy
  • Supervising organization and administration of academic, public and research libraries​
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1, 2
  • It is mostly a desk job
  • May need to handle a team
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs may be available
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Libraries usually work for 6/7 days a week and 7/8 hours everyday. This may vary from library to library
  • Shift system may be available
  • Overtime may be required

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 3

Preferably, B.Lib./M.Lib.

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Knowledge of all the books, journals and magazines in the library
  • Skilled in keeping record of books and other reading material
  • Ability to inspect the library in order to check any missing or torn books
  • Ability to maintain the decorum of the library 
  • Skilled in shelving the books according to their genres or categories
  • Ability to stay up-to-date with the new books in the market and contacting the dealers to get the same for the library
  • Skilled in assessing the conditions of the books and repairing the ones that are worn out
  • Proficient in library management
  • Basic knowledge of computer programmes to help library management

  • Observational skills
  • Ability to adapt in any environment
