JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Genealogist is expected to perform include:

  • Conducting research into the genealogical background of individual or families in order to establish descent from specific ancestor
  • Discovering and identifying the forebears of individual or family
  • Consulting different genealogical tables, publications and documents
  • Making use of records from church and court to establish evidence of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and legacies 
  • Tracing the lines of descent or succession
  • Constructing the chart showing lines of descent and family relationships
  • Preparing the history of family in narrative form
  • Writing brief sketches emphasizing points of interest in family background
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1, 2
  • It is not a desk job
  • Need not handle a team
  • Local travelling is a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs may be available
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Organizations usually work for 5/6 days a week and 8/9 hours everyday. This may vary from organization to organization

Preferably, Master's in library sciences

  • Ability to identify the forebears of an individual or family
  • Ability to properly study the different genealogical tables, publications and documents

  • Skilled in constructing charts that show the lines of descent and family relationships
