JOB DESCRIPTION ¹

The tasks an Epigraphist is expected to perform include:

Studying inscriptions on ancient monuments, temple walls, stone slabs, rocks, copper plates and other media
Deciphering writing to depict the historical evolution of a country, people and places
Revealing lost history of the past and early rulers, their culture, social and religious systems, etc.
Visiting historical and other important places and examining inscriptions on rocks, copper plates, temple walls, images, coins, seals, etc.
Taking ink impressions of inscriptions found on walls, stone slabs, pillars, etc. on paper
Deciphering or decoding contents of such inscriptions written in various languages and scripts
Publishing results of investigations reflecting on history and civilisation
Furnishing required information to scholars and research workers

WORK ENVIRONMENT ^{1, 2}

It is not a desk job
Need not handle a team
Local travelling is a part of this job role
Part-time work and contractual jobs may be available

Organizations usually work for 5/6 days a week and 8/9 hours everyday. This may vary from organization to organization

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING ³

Preferably, M.A. in history

In-depth knowledge of history and related areas of study
