JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Flight Engineer is expected to perform include:

  • Making pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight inspection, adjustments and minor repairs to ensure safe and efficient operation of aircraft
  • Monitoring control panel to verify aircraft performance and regulating engine speed according to instructions of Pilot, Aircraft
  • Making in-flight repairs and recording malfunctioning, which were not corrected during flight, and reporting needed repairs to ground maintenance personnel
  • Verifying passenger and cargo distribution and amount of fuel to ensure that weight and balance specifications are met​
  • Monitoring fuel gauges and computing the rate of fuel consumption

Working hours
  • Individual usually works for 5/6 days a week and 8/9 hours everyday. The organization remains open and functional for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 4, 5

Preferably, Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical or aeronautical engineering with valid Flight Engineer license

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Proficient in checking aircraft for defects such as fuel or oil leaks, malfunctions in electrical, hydraulic or pressurization systems according to pre-flight checklist before take-off
  • Adept at verifying passenger and cargo distribution and amount of fuel to ensure that weight and balance specifications are met
  • Skilled in making in-flight repairs such as replacing fuses, adjusting instruments and freeing jammed flight control cables using hand tools
  • Adept at taking emergency measures to compensate for failure of equipment such as autopilot wing heater and electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Proficient in monitoring fuel gauges and compute rate of fuel consumption and engine performance
  • Well-versed in performing aircraft repair work
  • Knowledge of flight theory and flight maintenance
  • Proficient in understanding and interpreting diagrams, charts and flight journals
