JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Lifeguard is expected to perform include:

  • Making swimmers aware of dangerous situations and in an emergency carrying out a rescue procedure
  • Checking water temperature, pH and chlorine levels in the pool/water facility
  • Setting up pool equipment and placing safety equipment within reach of lifeguard station
  • Setting preventive measures for swimmers
  • Defining precautionary measures
  • Setting safety guidelines for swimmers to be followed at pool site
  • Assisting/providing instructions on various swimming strokes and jumps
  • Demonstrating correct use of equipment according to the policies and procedures of the swimming centre from time to time
  • Monitoring sea/pool conditions and setting up appropriate safety flags
  • Highlighting the common types of injuries that might occur and affect the participants in water​
  • Maintaining his/her physical fitness in water and on land
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1, 2
  • It is not a desk job
  • Need not handle a team
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs may be available 
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Organizations usually work for  5/6 days a week and 8/10 hours every day. This may vary from organization to organization
  • Shift system may be available
  • Overtime may be available​

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 1
  • Preferably, 10th
  • Certified training for Lifeguard (programme aligned to SPF/Q1104 released by Sports Education, Fitness and Leisure Sector Skill)​​​
KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Ability to swim
  • Skilled in providing CPR, using artificial breathing and devices to resuscitate people
  • Proficiency in preparing concise reports and summary pool incidents/accident reports
  • In-depth knowledge of safety signs and instructions for swimmers/pool users
  • Skilled in self-defence/defence techniques required for rescue operations
  • Ability to use best accepted practices and principles of aquatic rescuing to enable prompt and appropriate responses to major aquatic emergencies
  • Knowledge of operating and maintaining aquatic equipment such as water filtration equipment, sanitation equipment, etc.
  • Equipped to use safety and flotation devices used by organization
  • Knowledge of safety and security guidelines for swimmer
  • Proficiency in various swimming techniques and strokes
  • Ability to swim as per emergency training requirements
  • Knowledge of physical limitations and fitness requirements for rescue operations
  • Knowledge of safety signs and instructions for swimmers/pool users
  • Basic knowledge of location of storage of safety equipment
  • Skilled in conflict resolution techniques to deal with difficult or aggressive clients
