JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Ticket Collector, Railway is expected to perform include:

  • Examining and collecting the passengers' tickets
  • Checking for excess luggage or unauthorized articles
  • Collecting the duty chart from the Station Master and reporting for duty in the prescribed uniform displaying the identification badge and taking position at the gate or platform as required
  • Checking the tickets of persons entering or leaving the platform
  • Clipping the tickets of incoming passengers who are boarding the trains and collecting tickets from outgoing passengers as appropriate
  • Checking and verifying badly dated, undated or blank paper tickets and maintaining their records
  • Preparing the charge sheet and handing over passengers who refuse to pay their railway dues
  • Handing over luggage, horse, carriage and dog tickets, if any, to the Parcel Clerk
  • Attending public enquiries, reserving seats before the departure of trains and indicating the running of trains on the notice board

  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities

Working hours
  • Working hours are 8 hours everyday for 6 days a week

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 8

Minimum - Matriculation or its equivalent with not less than 50% marks in the aggregate

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Ability to keep an eye on excess luggage, contraband and unauthorized goods carried, if any
  • Knowledge of the procedure involved in collecting the ticket fares or luggage charges with or without penalty as per the rules
  • Proficient in checking excess luggage and unauthorized articles carried by passengers
  • Well-versed in collecting ticket fares or excess luggage charges, adding the amount of penalty as per the rules and issuing fare receipts
  • Knowledge of how to prepare the statement of money collected and deposit cash with the Booking Clerk
  • Well-versed in preparing the charge sheet and handing it over to the Railway Police for the prosecution of passengers refusing to pay railway dues
  • Knowledge of the traffic rules and regulations
  • Adept at depositing the money collected at stations as prescribed
  • Knowledge of how to handover passengers who refuse to pay railway dues to the Station Master or the Ticket Collector for prosecution, etc.
  • Knowledge of checking and confiscating badly dated or undated tickets and preparing their statement
  • Adept at extending help and protection to passengers when sought 
DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES 1
  • Knowledge of how to fix labels on air conditioned coaches, I & II class sleeping compartments and reserved seats
  • Knowledge of how to guide passengers to their berth or coach
  • Knowledge of the procedure followed in public enquiries
  • Adept at reserving seats before the departure of train and indicating the running of trains on the notice board
  • Adept at checking and turning away beggars and unauthorized hawkers from the platform
