JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Fitter, Railway Carriage and Wagon is expected to perform include:

  • Checking the repairs and setting of various metal parts and units of the railway coaches and waggons to locate the damaged or worn out parts
  • Stripping off the wooden and metal fixtures, removing the outer shell or coach and placing it on the wooden block using the hoisting equipment
  • Removing the undercarriage frame, bogey, wheel assembly, vacuum units, springs, buffers, etc. as required

  • It needs one to be on their toes
  • May need to supervise a team of Khalasis
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
  • Work from home option is not available

  • Working hours are 8 hours everyday for 6 days a week

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 12, 9, 10, 11

Minimum - 10th pass or its equivalent (under 10+2 system) with 50% marks and ITI graduate in related trade from a recognized Industrial Training Institute affiliated to NCTV

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Proficiency in getting the bogey completely cleaned by the Khalasis, examining it for damages, cracking, etc.
  • Ability to replace the cross members, damaged and worn-out parts of body using hand tools
  • Adept at checking the pivot pins, side bearings, etc. to set and maintain the necessary clearances
  • Well-versed with checking the condition of the springs, brake fittings, buffers, etc. and repairing or replacing the worn out and damaged ones
  • Knowledge of how to test the vacuum unit for vacuum pressure over the testing machine, change the defective parts and reset them
  • Adept at cleaning and inspecting the wheel bearings and replacing them where necessary
  • Proficiency in getting the wheel machined, faced and tyre set 
  • Proficiency in refitting the wheel assembly using new parts such as keyways, guides, space bars, etc.
  • Well-versed with examining the condition of the coach work and replacing the worn or corroded frames with new ones
  • Adept at fitting the various fittings to the coaches, placing repaired or overhauled coaches over the bogey using the overhead crane, fastening and fitting the bogey to the coach by tightening the bolts, nuts, space bar, connecting rods, etc. and aligning and fitting the metal frame and doors to the waggons, etc.

  • Adept at erection of new coaches or waggons or in conducting their periodical overhauling
  • Ability to attend the repairs of the coach and waggon buffers, vacuum brakes, etc.
  • Proficiency in keeping a record of the parts examined
