JOB DESCRIPTION 1
The tasks a Fitter, Loco is expected to perform include:
  • Repairing locomotives and ensuring that they are in perfect working condition according to the instruction and guidance of the Loco Foreman
  • Examining the drawings and other specifications and checking the parts for defects and accuracy of fit using gauges, micrometres and other measuring instruments
  • Dismantling the units and components partly or completely to remove the damaged or worn out parts and repairing them or obtaining their replacements

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 11, 12, 13, 10

Minimum - 10th passed or its equivalent (under 10+2 system) with 50% marks and ITI graduate in related trade from a recognized Industrial Training Institute affiliated to NCTV

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Proficient in assembling the parts and doing supplementary tooling as needed for ensuring accuracy of fit
  • Adept at uncoupling all the parts and mechanisms from the wheel assembly fitted to the engine chassis or frame to get the boilers mounted on the frame free from the wheels
  • Well-versed with directing the Crane Operator to lift and place the engine frame along with the boiler over the wooden stand or blocks
  • Knowledge of how to send the wheel assembly and connected parts to the machine shop for repairing or reconditioning of the wheels, cross bars, etc.
  • Adept at unscrewing the nuts and bolts and removing all the boiler mounting such as the safety valve, gland steam fountains, whistle pipes, smoke box fittings, etc.
  • Well-versed with lifting the boiler from the frame by the crane and sending it to the boiler section for repairing and servicing 
  • Adept at examining the engine frame for damage, cracks and other defects and marking the area for welding, rivetting, etc. as required
  • Proficient in checking the pistons, valves, cylinders, etc. and getting the cylinder bored to the specific accuracy
  • Adept at repairing the valve assembly, fitting new rings and assembling all the parts and units according to the specifications under the guidance of the Loco Supervisor/Foreman
  • Well-versed with testing the reassembled parts and units for components and making the necessary adjustments
  • Knowledge of how to check, adjust and lubricate the parts and joints periodically or direct the helpers to do so and perform other tasks under the guidance of the Loco Foreman to keep the loco engine and equipment in good working order

  • Knowledge of how to keep a record of the parts examined and the performance of the equipment
  • Functional knowledge of steam or diesel engines
  • Knowledge of how to repair, service and overhaul particular units or components
