JOB DESCRIPTION ¹

The tasks a Clay Maker (Pottery) is expected to perform include:

Preparing and making clay for pottery articles
Mixing different types of clay manually or in a mixing machine fitted with double shafts and rollers
Adding the required quantity of water for mixing the clay
Stacking the clay in yards for curing and drying
Checking by sight and touch that the moisture content of the clay is to the required standard for pressing
Feeding the conveyor with cured clay for dropping in the mixing and pug mill or feeding the mill manually with clay

WORK ENVIRONMENT ²

It requires one to be on their feet
Need not handle a team
Local travelling is not a part of this job
Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
Work from home option is not available

Working hours

Clay product and refractory manufacturing industries usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from unit to unit
Shift system maybe available
Being self-employed is also an option. In this case, working hours and days are flexible

Knowledge about the type of clay to use, such as earthenware, stoneware or porcelain
Ability to use various tools, including pottery wheels, moulds and carving tools
Well-versed with operating the blunger and auxiliary equipment to blend and mix clay
Proficient with mixing clays according to the formula
Hand-eye coordination
Near vision
Good colour sense
Arm-hand steadiness
