JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Carpet Weaver, Hand Knitting is expected to perform include:

  • Weaving woollen or cotton carpets and druggets on a handloom
  • Studying the design and colour combination from the chart
  • Determining the number of knots involved in the pattern by counting the graphical squares as instructed 
  • Counting and determining the number and length of wrap strands required in a single colour weaving of a particular size of carpet
  • Preparing the cotton yarn for wrap by processes of bleaching, dyeing as required
  • Winding by hand the requisite number of cotton strands on the wrap beam according to the quality and number of stitches required
  • Drawing ends from the wrap-beam and tying them to the carpet beam
  • Collecting the woollen yarn and winding it by hand into balls
  • Handing the woollen balls from the roof near the loom to facilitate the pulling and weaving of yarn
  • ​Setting and adjusting the loom

  • It needs one to be on their toes
  • May need to handle a team
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Being self-employed is an option. In this case, the working hours and days will be flexible
  • Factories usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from factory to factory
  • Shift system maybe available

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 

ITI graduate

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Proficient in weaving carpets and druggets on a handloom
  • Well-versed with determining the number of weavers required according to the size of the carpet 
  • Adept with passing and drawing weft yarn on each strand of wrap 
  • Knowledge of cutting the yarn after each knot at a fixed length to maintain the required thickness 
  • Well-versed with moving the heald (part of loom mechanism) through the control string for interlacement of the wrap
  • Knowledge of passing and adding two layers of thread or jute yarn through the wrap sheds for holding woollen knots or piles
  • Knowledge of pressing the knots and weft filling by hand work to ensure an even stiffness
  • Adept with the trimming of extra fibre at intervals using hand shears
  • Good hand-eye coordination skills
  • Manual dexterity
