JOB DESCRIPTION 1
The tasks an Electrotyper is expected to perform include:
  • Performing all or several tasks in making printing plates from set-up type by electro-plating process, using hand tools, electro-plating equipment and metal casting, trimming and forming machines
  • Placing set up type on bed of hydraulic press
  • Laying wax-coated sheet of metal or sheet of plastic or lead on type and pressing it to make mould
  • Removing mould from press and trimming its edges
  • Spraying or coating mould with electro- conductive substances and placing in electrolytic bath until a shell of desired thickness is formed on the mould
  • Examining mould with magnifier to detect imperfect formation of halftone dots, lines, etc.and rectifying them
  • Shaving , trimming and smoothing bend plates using hand tools and machines
  • Printing proof from plate and making new plate , if required
WORK ENVIRONMENT 
  • It needs one to be on their toes 
  • Need not handle a team 
  • Travelling is not a part of this job
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Working hours are 10/12 hours everyday for 5/6 days a week. This may vary from company to company
  • Shift system maybe available

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 

Any graduate

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Knowledge of removing mould from press and trimming its edges
  • Proficient in spraying or coating mould with electro-conductive substances and placing it in electrolytic bath until shell of desired thickness has formed on mould
  • Adept at removing shell from mould by rinsing it in hot water and filling back of shell with molten lead to form plate, using pouring lead or casting machine
  • Well-versed in examining plate with magnifier to detect imperfect formation of halftone dots, lines and types and rectifying them using engraver's hand tools
  • Proficient in shaving, trimming, smoothening and bending plate using hand tools and machines as required, in readiness for printing
