JOB DESCRIPTION 1
The tasks a Coach Builder, Railway is expected to perform include:
  • Constructing and repairing the wooden bodies of railway coaches, using hand and power tools
  • Studying the sketches or diagrams for the design of the body to be constructed
  • Estimating and collecting timber pieces of the required quantity and sizes
  • Replacing broken, damaged or worn out wooden parts for the panels of the railway coach with new ones, and fixing fasteners, fittings, latches, glass on doors and windows etc. as required
WORK ENVIRONMENT 
  • It needs one to be on their toes
  • May need to handle a team of Helpers
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Working hours are 8 hours everyday for 6 days a week
  • Shift system is available
  • Overtime is available

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 

Minimum - 10th pass or ITI 

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Knowledge of how to read sketches, diagrams
  • Proficient in cutting and shaping wood to the required shapes and sizes
  • Knowledge of how to use a chisel, planer, saw and other hand tools
  • Well-versed in the different types and qualities of timber
  • Proficient in cutting wood with power driven machines according to the drawing and other specifications
  • Well-versed in fitting and assembling various parts on the chassis or frame of the coach
  • Knowledge of how to lay or fix the floors, sides, roofs, wooden panels, boards etc. and secure them tightly to the frame with screws, pop rivets, bolts and nuts
DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES 1
  • Knowledge of how to apply wax, French polish or shellac to the wooden surface as a protective coat of paint
  • Knowledge of how to engrave or carve decorative or ornamental designs on wooden panels
