JOB DESCRIPTION ¹

The tasks a Serang, Engine Room/Engine Bosun is expected to perform include:

Controlling and directing work of engine room crew on-board ship
Allocating duties to engine room crew
Ensuring that engine room, floor plates and paint work have been properly cleaned, and spares are properly greased and stored
Supervising work of Tindal, Engine Room and Stoker, Ship
Assisting Ship Engineers in maintenance work
Supervising cleaning of boilers, washing of tank tops, chipping and scraping in engine room, etc.
Maintaining discipline amongst engine room crew

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING ⁴

Preferably, 8^th
Serang/Lascar Cum Serang certificate issued by competent authority under the relevant statutes

KEY COMPETENCIES ¹

Knowledge of motor engines
Knowledge of magnetos, carburettors, water circulating and oil pumps, sparking plugs, etc.
Ability to dismantle motor engines and any accessory part of it
Ability to detect excessive wear and other defects and reassemble the parts in proper order of a motor engine
Ability to detect wrong in the event of the engine failing
Knowledge of realising the danger of fire and understanding the precautions necessary to prevent it
Knowledge of auxiliary machineries, instruments, hull protection, refrigeration, etc.
