JOB DESCRIPTION 1
The tasks a Fireman, Locomotive is expected to perform include:
  • Firing and operating the steam locomotive boiler by stocking coal in it to maintain the required steam pressure
  • Checking the safety plugs of the firebox, moving the parts of the engine and supplying water and coal before the commencement of the journey
  • Assisting the Engine Driver in observing the signals and other required instructions

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 7

Minimum - Matriculation pass plus ITI graduate in specified trades or diploma in the appropriate field in lieu of ITI

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Proficient in stoking coal judiciously into the firebox of the boiler to maintain a constant fire for generating steam
  • Knowledge of how to keep the coal consumption within the prescribed limits
  • Well-versed in oiling and cleaning the engine parts, filling the water tank enroute with water at the water columns and maintaining the required water level in the boiler
  • Proficient in ensuring the correct operation of the engine lubricator and raking of fire at waiting stations when the engine takes water
  • Knowledge of how to store the prescribed quantity of coal, water, etc. in the engine and prepare it for the journey by firing the boiler to the required steam pressure
