JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Driver, Shunting (Loco) is expected to perform include:

  • Driving the loco engine on the rail tracks
  • Forming of and breaking up of the passenger and goods trains under the direction of the Yard Master within the traffic yard
  • Taking charge of the engine after checking the various parts of the engine for operational efficiency
  • Driving the engine according to the hand or yard signals from the Signalman, Railway Points Worker and Railway and Pointsmen, Railway
  • Joining the coaches, goods and empty waggons for placing them at the required places and formation of the trains

  • It needs one to be on their toes
  • Need not handle a team
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Working hours are 8 hours everyday for 6 days a week

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 14

Minimum - Matriculation pass plus ITI graduate in specified trades or diploma in the appropriate field in lieu of ITI

 
KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Knowledge of how to operate engines and auxiliary equipment
  • Ability to read gauges, metres and charts to track engine operations
  • Ability to monitor engine, chemical and fuel levels
  • Well-versed in inspecting equipment to ensure that it is operating correctly
  • Proficient in maintaining safety devices
DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES 1
  • Ability to work the light train in case of an emergency
  • Knowledge of how to conduct minor repairs of the engine and supervise the work of the crew on the engine
  • Ability to drive a diesel railway engine or electric railway engine for shunting
