JOB DESCRIPTION 1
The tasks of a Lascar is expected to perform include:
  • Cleaning decks and deck equipment by washing decks, chipping points, painting wood, etc.
  • Breaking out rigs, overhauls lifeboats, cargo-handling and life-saving gears lowers and raises lifeboat
  • Taking depth sounding in unfamiliar or shallow waters and shouting information to bridge
  • Making ready derricks and winches for operation
WORK ENVIRONMENT 
  • It is a not a desk job
  • Need not handle a team
  • Local travelling is a part of this job
  • Part-time work is not available
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Ship usually sails for 5/6 days a week and works for 14/15 hours every day. This may vary from ship to ship

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 2

Minimum – 10th Pass

KEY COMPETENCIES 1
  • Ability to load ships, store cargo, handle gear, stationary rigging, and running gear
  • Knowledge of ship stability, ship manoeuvring and ship management
  • Knowledge of maintaining tasks to preserve the painted surface of the ship
  • Ability to maintain line and ship equipment
  • Knowledge of maintaining navigational and maintaining duties
  • Knowledge of using satellite and other electronic devices
  • Familiar with safety devices like life boats and other life-saving gears
  • Physically fit
DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES 

Knowledge of stowing and removing cargo from hold
