JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Laboratory Assistant, Petroleum and Lubricants is expected to perform include:

  • Testing and analysing samples of crude oil and petroleum products during processing stages following standard test procedures and ensuring prescribed standard of products
  • Testing samples of crude and blended oils, gases, asphalts and pressure distillates using test and laboratory equipment
  • Analysing contents of products to determine presence of gases using appropriate distillation columns
  • Determining hydrocarbon composition of gasoline, blending stocks and gases using fractional distillation equipment and mass spectrometer
  • Operating fractional columns to separate crude oil into oils with different boiling points to determine their properties
  • Analysing composition of products to determine quantitative presence of gum, sulphur, aromatics olefins, water and sediment
  • Comparing colour of liquid products with charts to determine processing factors measurable by colour
  • Comparing test results with specifications and recommending processing changes to improve and control quality of products​

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 4

Preferably, B.Sc.  in chemistry

  • Knowledge of handling and setting up the apparatus
  • Proficient in handling petroleum samples and chemicals
  • Proficient in following safe practices
  • Working knowledge of testing sub-surface cores during drilling operations
