JOB DESCRIPTION ¹

The tasks a Wastewater-Treatment-Plant Operator is expected to perform include:

Operating the sewage treatment, sludge processing and disposal equipment in wastewater (sewage) treatment plant to control flow and processing of sewage

Monitoring the control panels and adjusting valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of sewage

Observing the variations in operating conditions and interpreting meter and gauge readings and test results to determine load requirements

Starting and stopping the pumps, engines and generators to control flow of raw sewage through filtering, settling, aeration and sludge digestion processes

Maintaining the log of operations and recording meter and gauge readings

Giving directions to sewage disposal workers in performing routine operations and maintenance

Collecting sewage sample for conducting tests

Operating and maintaining power generating equipment

Working hours

Organizations remain functional for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Individuals usually work for 5/6 days a week and 8/9 hours everyday. This may vary from organization to organization

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING ⁴

Preferably, diploma in mechanical/chemical

KEY COMPETENCIES ¹

Knowledge of the processing of sewage
Knowledge of operating generators to control flow of raw sewage
Well-versed in manual and/or remote control operating valves and gates
Adept at maintaining operation of logs and meter recordings

DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES ¹

Able to work under high pressure
Good hand-eye co-ordination
Ability to follow instructions
