JOB DESCRIPTION ¹

The tasks a Brick layer, Refractory is expected to perform include:

Building and repairing furnaces, ovens, kilns, fireboxes, fire places and other high temperature structures

Spreading minimum possible fireclay mortar evenly over furnace with trowel and laying and taping fire bricks or refractory blocks in position

Sealing joints with fireclay mortar or chemically resistant cement to bind bricks together making provision for expansion of joints in furnace in linings

Preparing support to proper curvature to replace arched roofs of furnaces or to construct new ones as directed or specified

Patching portions of furnaces with fireclay, as necessary and removing excess mortar

Specializing in building and repairing particular type of high temperature construction

Replacing linings of ladles or tapping sports of furnaces

Building new smoke tunnels

WORK ENVIRONMENT ²

It is a not desk job

Need not handle a team

Local travelling is a part of this job role

Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

ITI graduate

KEY COMPETENCIES

Knowledge of construction equipment and tools, brick laying

Knowledge about availability, quality and appropriate use of construction materials

Knowledge of selecting chisels, pneumatic or surfacing tools and determining sequence of use

Competent in handling construction related equipment accurately

Knowledgeable about safety measures at work

Ability to read blueprints

EXPECTED EARNINGS ⁴
